In the vision of Thomas Jefferson and our other revolutionary founders, the family farmer was the foundation stone of democracy. The landowning farmer had the independent means to tell parasitic financiers and their minions to go to hell. Beholden to no one, they could work together to support the rights of working people. Naturally, the financiers wanted to crush them, and have worked hard to do so ever since with the chains of agribusiness and corporate exploitation and enserfing levels of debt. We need to support farmers and get back to Jefferson’s vision in rural America. https://laboristmovement.substack.com/p/restoring-family-farms

The key is DECENTRALIZATION! Which means Democratic, local control.

So any time we face a choice between large, centralized projects (which claim to be more "efficient") we should instead back the smaller, local, grassroots project instead. This applies to our power systems (solar, electric, etc.) to our farms, to our utilities of all kinds.

Our coalition of activists shut down a proposed “solar farm” near my home that would have rendered hundreds of acres of productive farmland useless.

So fuck that shit.

250 years ago, the landowning male farmers were among the few who were authorized to vote.

Thanks so much for this post. A friend once taught me to pray at every meal by giving gratitude to ALL the people, animals, and plants who participated in making the meal possible. On the people side, I thank everyone from the farmers and the distributors to the supermarket, to my own family's work, my ability to shop, to prepare the meal, and to share it with others. This Thanksgiving I deeply give thanks to all the farmers and I pray for their well-being, financial stability, health and happiness.

Thank you for this profound message, Elizabeth.

You made me realize even further how fortunate I am to live on a small (six acre) farm. We have fifty fruit trees and grow most of our own vegetables as well, which I can or freeze. I know what’s going into my own body in this respect.

My area is populated by small (100 acres or less) farms, and they’re thriving.

This is true. I have found out about what gave me pancreatic and thyroid cancer. Finally the truth came out. Check out downwinders. The entire state of Idaho is now on the list.

Here is a gratitude prayer song, using the well-known tune of “ Doxology” from my childhood church going.

It’s a beautiful unity prayer for all the food we are about to take, and it is non-denominational, based on honoring the Earth. 🎶

“Praise earth from whom this food has come

Praise soil and wind and rain and sun

Bless all of those who have leant a hand

And thank the spirit of the land “

Amen

TU for this 'uplifting' prayer.

The "Turkey's" this Thanksgiving are the deceived electorate who voted for change. 🤔

The dismantling of our food chain seriously undermines food safety for all of us.

Thanks so much for all you do, Elizabeth.

Thank-you, Dennis. After living with someone who tills the soil, grows the food and tends the land, I've learned how essentially human it is to grow our own food--and to share the bounty. I just finished reading The Service Berry book, basically about the idea of a Gift Economy. It has opened my eyes to the fact that this has been done before, with people practicing food and resource sharing. I grieve for the non-human animals on factory farms and would like to turn this kind of food production around into the arms of small farmers,. Our indigenous peoples know this different kind of economy and have much to teach us. Something to consider as we celebrate this weekend.

The elimination of family farms as well as small businesses has also a political aim, the same as Stalin's elimination of the Kulaks (family farmers) in the USSR was a tool of totalitarian control, employees of collectivised kolchoses and nowadays of big corporations are much easier to control politically.

R. or D., it doesn't matter if our food is poisoned. This scares me, but what really scares me, is that we are heading into a cooling period. Valentina Zharkova, an astrophysicist, thru her research on the sun, shows it's intensity is going down. It starts now, just when historic farm bankruptcies are happening, and our dumb shit govt. continues to let corporations poison our land. I pray.

Childbearing & Right to Bear Arms are more controversial across Men & Women than Dems. & Repubs. Let’s not be hoodwinked by demagogues. If we declare the perfect coequality of humankind to be an absolute truth (as Madison did)—the Evil Spirit of partisan politics will vanish & the violence will end.

We need to have a movement for the land to be returned to all people. Nobody should have to pay for land. It should be a birthright for all. Please take a look at this. It is really brilliant the work they are doing.

I have left a message on your FB messenger. Please respond as it is of the utmost importance, re.,, legal actions to halt Ohio, Cuy. County, and the Haslams actions regarding the Browns. All of their proposals are contrary to nearly all angles of the law, and little more than charity to the Haslams who don't need it nor deserve it. I believe I have knowledge of unstoppable angles.
